Vancouver General Hospital performs approximately 700 cardiopulmonary bypass cardiac cases yearly. Fellows will be exposed to a range of procedures including coronary artery bypass grafting (on and off-pump), valve replacement and repair, thoracic aorta repair and stenting, AICD implantation and other electrophysiological procedures, trans-aortic valve implantation, as well as various DAVINCI robot-assisted cases. The division of cardiac anesthesia at VGH also provides a full-time perioperative transesophageal echo (TEE) service and runs the 12-bed cardiac surgery intensive care unit (CSICU). In addition to providing anesthetics, fellows will spend some of their clinical time involved with both of these services and are encouraged to sit the NBE’s Perioperative Transesophageal Echo Exam (PTEeXAM).

Among the thoracic surgical procedures that are performed at Vancouver General Hospital are lung transplantations, surgical management of respiratory failure, lung resections, esophageal surgery, and minimally invasive surgery.
