Perioperative medicine at Fiona Stanley

Perioperative fellows will be exposed to a range of medical and anaesthesia sub-specialties, gaining valuable experience in the full perioperative journey of high risk patients undergoing major surgery.

There will be regular opportunities to risk assess and optimise high risk patients within the Preadmission Clinic. Fellows will be able to follow these patients through their perioperative journey, providing anaesthesia for high risk patients particularly those on the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway.

Regular cardiopulmonary exercise testing sessions will be undertaken by perioperative fellows under the supervision of the respiratory physicians.

Fellows will be able to undertake post-operative ward rounds of select high risk patients with the Acute Pain Team. This round will provide an opportunity to implement ERAS principles while detecting and preventing early complications in complex medical patients having major surgery.

There is the opportunity to be involved in the ongoing development/evolution of a variety of perioperative initiatives while also playing a key role in perioperative medicine education to medical and nursing staff.

Fellowship supervisor: Dr Michela Salvadore
