Trauma / Orthopaedics at The Alfred

Hospital is a tertiary referral centre and the state Trauma and Burns unit.

Time will be spent in elective and emergency trauma surgery (in and out of hours), facio-maxillary, burns and cardiothoracic list, pain rounds and trauma unit ward rounds.

5-10 hours a week spent in education/research, including radiology and imaging skills and surgical airway skills. Arrangements can be made to gain experience in FAST, cricothyroidotomy, TTE, TOE and radiology. It is also possible to arrange time with the Metropolitan Ambulance service to gain exposure to the pre-hospital environment and aeromedical retrieval, and with the Department of Human Services to receive training in Mass Casualty Trauma Care.

Fellows are expected to participate in the teaching of registrars.

Rota is 1:12, 45 hours a week, with one night a week on call, followed by the next day off. One weekend in four.
