Vascular in Plymouth

The post will suit trainees in their last 2 years of training wanting to develop skills obtained in intermediate and higher vascular modules.

By the end of the fellowship, the advanced vascular trainee will be expected to deliver anaesthetic services at consultant level, working independently with distant consultant oversight. You will develop a full range of anaesthetic skills, to include pre-operative assessment that can involve accreditation in CPET, shared decision making, anaesthetic representation at the weekly MDT, awake regional anaesthesia, management of major blood loss, management of high risk patients. You will be expected to take on a teaching and supervisory role for trainees on intermediate and higher vascular modules.

You will work directly with 10 consultant anaesthetists with regular commitment to vascular surgery. You will also work closely with 6 full time consultant surgeons, 2 of which are military, with a dedicated vascular theatre delivering 5 full days operating per week. Some of these sessions are delivered in interventional radiology supported by 5 Consultant Interventional Radiologists. The service delivers the full range of vascular procedures including open and EVAR aneurysm repairs, carotid surgery and peripheral arterial reconstruction. Having a dedicated theatre allows an excellent culture of teamwork and it is anticipated an advanced trainee would become integral to the running of that team.

As a large university teaching hospital there will be ample opportunity to become involved in research. You would be fully expected and supported to engage in quality improvement activity aligned with local and national priorities in vascular surgery including those recent in NICE, GIRFT and NCEPOD publications. Any work undertaken should be of such a standard as to be suitable for publication or presentation at local, national or international specialist meetings. To support you in these ambitions you will have dedicated non-clinical sessions during your working week.
