Appointed fellows are expected to contribute to the senior staff grade rota and fulfil the on-call commitments that are associated. They are allocated dedicated non-clinical time for research, QI and teaching. They receive prioritisation for "airway lists" to ensure adequate clinical exposure to case mix and advanced airway management techniques.
Advanced airway fellowship: St John's hospital is a tertiary referral centre for head and neck, ENT and maxillofacial surgery.
Appointed fellows should expect to gain exposure to anaesthesia for patients undergoing laryngopharyngectomy, major oromaxillofacial cancer resection and free flap reconstruction, thyroid and parotid surgery, endoscopic laryngotracheal surgery, maxillofacial trauma, and routine rhinology, otology and oromaxillofacial surgery.
Fellows will gain experience and training in advanced airway management techniques, including awake tracheal intubation (awake flexible bronchoscopic-assisted and awake videolaryngoscopy-assisted), videolaryngoscopy (standard geometry and hyperangulated), VAFI, jet ventilation, apnoeic oxygenation with high-flow nasal oxygen, amongst others.
The post holder will be expected to actively participate in research, quality improvement projects and education/teaching relating to airway management, for which they will receive dedicated non-clinical time.
Fellows contribute to the senior staff grade rota and will be required to fulfil the associated on-call commitments/other duties associated.
