Positions commence in the first week of February and August each year. Applicants will need to make their preferred start date clear.
Applications open in March of the preceding year, with a closing date in late April or early May. Occasionally, additional positions are advertised in September or October.

Minimum Requirements
Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
New Zealand and Australian trainees: Fulfilled all requirements of Advanced Training to allow progress to Provisional Fellowship training when commencing the post
UK trainees: Completed ST5 and all Essential Units of Higher Level Training by commencement of post, with a minimum of 4 years' experience in clinical anaesthesia.
Republic of Ireland trainees: Completed SAT5 (with eligibility to progress to SAT6) by commencement of post, with a minimum of 4 years' experience in clinical anaesthesia.
Canadian trainees: Completed a residency accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with a minimum of 4 years' experience in clinical anaesthesia.

Research is a key pillar underpinning ANZCA's mission and a Health NZ Waitematā priority. Our department has a track record in supporting anaesthetic researchers, appointing clinical academics, and providing research time. The Waitematā Anaesthesia Research group has a high research output, and has been awarded significant external research funding. Furthermore, our research has received recognition at national and international levels, receiving prizes at various scientific meetings.
We offer a 12-24-month research fellowship that supports and trains the fellow in clinical research and academic anaesthesia. Approximately 50% of paid time with be allocated to research and academic-related activities, with the remaining 50% to clinical duties.
The ideal candidate will have an interest and track record in research. However, the latter is not essential and all candidates will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to:
Critically appraise literature and apply it to their research and clinical practice
Design a research protocol and attain the required approvals to conduct the project
Fund, implement, and manage a research project
Develop skills required for scientific writing and presentation
Deliver academic lectures
Manage a research group
It is expected that the fellow develops a research project of their own, conducts the study, and presents the results at an international conference and in a peer-reviewed publication. The process of planning a project and obtaining institutional approval will begin prior to the commencement of the fellowship.
Responsibilities
Contribution to departmental audit, research, and/or measures for quality improvement
Develop and conduct a clinical or laboratory-based research project, including protocol design, funding application, and attaining institutional approvals
Participate in departmental research
Maintain a logbook of research and clinical activities

All fellows are expected to contribute to departmental audits, research, and/or quality-improvement measures. A research project in a relevant area may be allocated to the fellow on commencement of duties.
All roles are for 4 days per week. The fifth day is a rostered day off. In addition, the fellows share an evening and weekend roster, where they supervise registrars on duty. They are supported by an on-call consultant. Overnight duties may be introduced in the future as the service expands.
Remuneration
Employment conditions are in accordance with the employer collective agreement of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS). Fellows who have not completed their specialist training (e.g. not obtained their UK CCT or FANZCA) are paid on Step 1 of the "Medical and Dental Officer" scale. Fellows who are eligible for specialist registration in New Zealand (e.g. post-CCT, post-FANZCA, completed Canadian residency) are paid on the "Fellow" scale. The figures listed in the employer collective agreement document are base pay figures (4 days per week) and do not include work performed after hours, which is paid at 1.5x the base hourly rate. In addition, fellows may choose to participate in the weekday evening roster at our satellite hospital or take additional locum duties on their rostered day off. All 12-month positions include a generous CME allowance of $16,000.
