The Department is recognised as one of the 25 Academic Departments in Anaesthesia in the UK and is one of the six research programmes supported by the trusts Research and Development Strategy. The programs key objectives focus on; Sepsis in the critically ill, ARDS, Weaning, Resuscitation, Peri-operative medicine, Chronic pain and patient involvement and engagement. The department is led by two Professors who hold NIHR Senior Investigator Awards. The team comprises two NIHR post-doctoral fellows, full time clinical research manager, research fellows, nurses, data co-ordinators and research administrators.

The appointee would be expected to provide one day/ week to critical care primarily at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, but potentially at Solihull and Good Hope Hospitals. All other daytime duties would be devoted to research. Out of hours duties would be 1:8 senior trainee rota cover.
