====================================
The Perioperative Medicine Fellowship in FSFHG provides exposure to a range of medical and anaesthesia sub-specialities, gaining valuable experience in all aspects of the perioperative journey of high-risk patients undergoing major surgery.
Fellows participate in the assessment of patients at the pre-admission clinic and provide anaesthesia for high-risk surgical patients, particularly those on the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathway including colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, vascular and orthopaedics. Fellows also partake in weekly cardiopulmonary exercise testing sessions with respiratory physicians and assist in the day-to-day running of the Patient Blood Management program with nursing staff across both hospitals.
Fellows are expected to be involved in the ongoing development of a variety of perioperative initiatives, including prehabilitation programs, multidisciplinary team meetings and post-operative extended recovery unit. Fellows also provide perioperative medicine education to medical and nursing staff and lead a research or audit project of their choosing. Fellows present at least once at the Anaesthesia Departmental Meeting and at registrar teaching. Attendance at national and international perioperative medicine conferences and courses is encouraged, and candidates are encouraged to apply for the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Diploma in Perioperative Medicine where possible.
