By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to:
Demonstrate evidence-based clinical practice in perioperative medicine
Assess patients with a wide range of medical conditions undergoing surgical procedures of varying levels of risk, including the rational use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
Institute appropriate preoperative management plans for patient optimisation
Manage complex patients post-operatively, working in consultation with the primary team

All fellows are expected to contribute to departmental audits, research, and/or quality-improvement measures. A research project in a relevant area may be allocated to the fellow on commencement of duties.
All roles are for 4 days per week. The fifth day is a rostered day off. In addition, the fellows share an evening and weekend roster, where they supervise registrars on duty. They are supported by an on-call consultant. Overnight duties may be introduced in the future as the service expands.
Remuneration
Employment conditions are in accordance with the employer collective agreement of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS). Fellows who have not completed their specialist training (e.g. not obtained their UK CCT or FANZCA) are paid on Step 1 of the "Medical and Dental Officer" scale. Fellows who are eligible for specialist registration in New Zealand (e.g. post-CCT, post-FANZCA, completed Canadian residency) are paid on the "Fellow" scale. The figures listed in the employer collective agreement document are base pay figures (4 days per week) and do not include work performed after hours, which is paid at 1.5x the base hourly rate.
